Research in Action
DEXLIFE took part in the European Commission's “Research in Action” exhibition which ran from 9-20 July 2012, in Dublin, Ireland. This was an event which showcased EU funded FP7 research projects involving Irish partners. The event was by the Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, who attended the DEXLIFE stand. Over 100 individuals were invited to the launch, including representatives from academia, research, industry, media and government, with only standing room left before it even started! On the day of the launch, a VO2max fitness was demonstrated by Grainne O’Donoghue.
The DEXLIFE stand included an unmanned interactive exhibit providing the public with information regarding diabetes and diabetes prevention. Those who attended were provided with the opportunity to assess their own risk of developing diabetes using the FINDRISC questionnaire, based on age, body mass index, waist circumference, blood pressure, diet and exercise habits, family history and ethnicity. All necessary equipment was provided at the stand to allow participant to weigh themselves, measure their height, calculate body mass index, and measure their waist circumference. Those with a high diabetes risk score were invited to participate in the DEXLIFE lifestyle intervention in DCU. Diabetes related educational material was also provided for the public to take away with them as a reference.
